While learning a new craft, do you feel unintended in your work? When it comes to something you’ve mastered, do you act in a more deliberate manner?

When it comes to expertise, one thing the top producers in any category have in common is deliberate movement. With practice, both the athlete and the craftsman learn which actions are necessary and which waste time and lead to mistakes.

Tom Brady did not accidentally quarterback nine Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. Instead, he took deliberate actions to hone his craft and build positive relationships with his teammates.

Learn Deliberately

The fastest way to learn includes making mistakes, then reassessing, and taking action to correct whatever went wrong. Think of that kid who always took things apart and put them back together, where are they now? Likely building, fixing, or designing something that the rest of us rely on to work when needed.

With this in mind, could we fast track our learning through the deliberate use of mistakes and problem-solving? Would this method, in at least some cases, teach us more rapidly than a teacher or mentor?

It seems that in both cases, the answer leans toward yes. Within the confines of individual ability and desire, we would get a lot more done this way. Not to mention, we may find our journey of life more fulfilling this way.

Deliberate Examination

The next time that you have the opportunity to analyze a master while working at their craft. Notice their decisions and movements and appreciate how they seamlessly flow through their tasks. Ideally, this analysis would take place in an area in which you understand or desire to learn for yourself. This small study could provide massive results. What do you have to lose?
