Calisthenics Park First-Timer – Picture Post

Spread the love
Approx. Reading Time: 4 minutes In last week’s update, Bodyweight Exercises: My Free Solution to Excess Carnivore Energy I mentioned that I would be checking out a local calisthenics park over the weekend. My husband and I traveled down to the calisthenics park at Johnston War Memorial Park in Johnston, Rhode Island. We couldn’t have asked for better weather on this sunny, but cooler Sunday morning.

Johnston War Memorial Park

Currently, we live between Boston and Providence. So, we chose Johnston War Memorial Park due to less traffic, easy parking, and a higher star rating. When we pulled in, I noticed ample parking, designated walking routes, various courts, a children’s playground, the calisthenics park. All of these amenities surrounded by war memorials and artifacts. Despite the proximity to the highway, the park area seemed very quiet and calm. Pocasset Pond buffers much of the park from the main road dampening road noise. During our rest walks, we spotted a flock of geese up close enjoying the late summer pond water. Side Note: Signs posted read that pets are not allowed at this park.

Calisthenics Park

After a warm-up walk, we began our sets in the calisthenics park area. Going in, we did not expect to accomplish much. However, we figured that we should check it out and our best is more than not showing up. First, I challenged myself to both styles of balance beams available, a rounded and a flat. Meanwhile, my husband started on the parallel bars, which I moved to second. We both attempted the monkey bars. I could reach the second rung, but then couldn’t release to swing to the next. Using the low bar, we each completed sets of Australian pull-ups. Then, we finished our first round on the abs bench. I should mention again; we are both overweight and both new to calisthenics. We are taking everything slow and focus on perfect form and our greatest range of motion. After our first run through, we did a lap around the park taking pictures and enjoying the weather. After, we ran through a second set of the same exercises. On the second round of the parallel bars, my husband held my feet up while I did two sets of 5 full range of motion dips. He estimates that he held 50 or so pounds of weight, so maybe I am closer to an unassisted dip than I think. We finished off the afternoon with plenty of beef patties and a side of bacon. So far, no extreme muscle soreness, but taking today as a rest day! Each week, I provide an update on my carnivore and calisthenics journeys and information relevant to those curious.
