Today, I stumbled upon this video tweet from Stephen C. Storey, discussing how we diminish ourselves by using the word “just.” Go ahead, give him a minute (53 seconds) of your time.
Stephen acknowledges how the adverb, just, and other words like it minimize everything from accomplishments to skills to relationships to goals.
Often without us realizing the damage done.
I Just…
When we say, “I just… (fill in the blank)” or “my (fill in the blank) is just…” we belittle and diminish the value of whatever it modifies. If said regarding something of importance, our subconscious takes note and makes it smaller.
If you care about something, “just” should never be used to describe it. While, on the other hand, removing the word adds power, meaning, and an air of confidence.
Other words, such as, only, merely and simply work the same way.
Ultimately, I commit to removing these words in this context from my vocabulary for good – both when speaking and in writing. This constant effort matters to me and to those w
Take “Just” Out and Boom!
Next time, you catch yourself using words that diminish your efforts. Stop. Take a second. Then, repeat the statement without that one word. At that moment, see how different and more powerful it feels.
Sometimes, the most minor changes hold the greatest power in our lives.
Do It For You!
Removing minimizing words benefits our self-esteem and confidence. Also, those around us will naturally view us in a better light. Nothing wrong with that, right?
Come on. Give it a try and see how it makes you feel. Notice how others receive what you say more profoundly. Do it for you because YOU ARE WORTH IT!
