Buying an RV is a long-term decision.

One of the first questions I hear from shoppers is:

“What’s the monthly payment?”

It’s an understandable question.

But after years of helping people purchase travel trailers, I’ve learned that it often leads buyers to focus on the wrong thing.

The monthly payment is important.

It just shouldn’t be the first thing that decides which RV you buy.

Why monthly payments can be misleading

Things that can change your monthly payment:

  • Down payment
  • Interest rate
  • Loan length
  • Trade value

The same RV can have several different monthly payments.

That’s why comparing payments doesn’t always tell you which trailer is actually the better purchase.

The mistake that costs people the most

Talk about trading after one year.

Here is a little story.

I had a customer once who came in and bought an affordable single axle unit. One month to the day later they were in trading it in for the same setup on a larger set up, $10,000 value waste between trade in, additional taxes, and new registration fees.  They understood I had sold them what they asked for accepted the loss and love their new unit, but the right unit the first time would have saved them big time!

Now they’re paying:

  • Depreciation
  • Registration
  • Taxes
  • Dealer costs

Buying twice often costs much more than choosing the right trailer the first time.

Better questions to ask

Instead of

What’s the payment?

Ask:

✅ Does this fit how we camp?

✅ Will this still work in five years?

✅ Is there anything we’ll regret not having?

✅ Are we buying for today’s budget or tomorrow’s adventures?

My advice

I’m never going to tell someone to ignore their budget.

The payment absolutely matters.

But I’d much rather help someone find the right trailer first, then figure out how to make it fit comfortably within their budget.

Buying the right RV once is usually much less expensive than buying the wrong one twice.
