As I come back from a few weeks hiatus, I’m sharing my thoughts on a painting I completed yesterday. From nothing, figuratively as I used materials, I created something. In short, honestly, this experience became a metaphor for the tasks we complete throughout life.
A Painting
On Sunday afternoon, my husband requested that I create an American flag painting for a room we renovated. Of course, I happily accepted, and we chose a four canvas set up. Monday morning I got to work prepping the artboard and doing the first two colors of paint.
I, admittedly, assumed the size of the larger canvases resulting in a few mistakes. However, despite having to redo work on both the stripes and the star placement, I continued to focus on the final product.
By Monday evening, the canvases resembled the flag but still needed a lot more work to complete. I let the bright blue and red paint dry thoroughly overnight. Tuesday morning I began painting the white stripes first. Then, I moved on to my three attempts at placing 50 stars.
As I waited for the white paint to dry, I felt reluctant to distress the paint. I knew the process held the potential to destroy all of my hard work. However, I knew adding a weathered look would add a lot to the final product. In the end, I went for it and realized that I should not have worried one bit. That final accent truly perfected the piece.
Every Thing Starts From Nothing
If I can turn four blank canvases into a replica of the American flag or, a blank page into an article or story, then, what else can I do? The truth is possibly anything. However, the only way to find out for sure is to start.
It works for everything. To complete something you must start somewhere, you always go from nothing to something. Whether it is a blank page, canvas, screen, or a set of ingredients or supplies doesn’t make a huge difference – to finish, we must start.
