We visited the South Rim of the Grand Canyon once before during our 2017 Road Trip. This time we saw the Grand Canyon dusted with snow. The sun felt amazing and part of the day I walked around without a jacket despite it only being in the 40s, it felt warmer.
Grand Canyon Mather Point and Beyond
Starting at Mather Point, our group walked along the entire rim trail and back. We often stopped to take in the gorgeous views, snap some photos, and also to navigate over the ice covering much of the lookout points. This trip, we spent more time and saw quite a bit more, but due to the weather conditions, we did not hike all of the areas initially planned.
Overlooks and Other Fun Pitstops
As we finished the Rim Trail, the group decided to check out all of the overlooks and stops along the East side of the Rim. During the last trip, we only made a couple of the stops before deciding to head back for the night. So, this time, we saw much more than in the past.
The Points
We decided to take a different route back to Flagstaff. We did this so we could stop at the pull-offs for Grandview, Moran, Lipan, and Navajo Point. Amazing views, but due to ice and snow we limited ourselves quite a bit and did not go off concrete onto the trails. Fortunately, this route gave us much more to see.
Tusayan Museum and Ruin
On the opposite side of the road between Moran Point and Lipan point lies a small offset location displaying Native American ruins and artifacts. As part of the National Park system, the artifacts receive careful preservation. The museum is small, but informative with the ruins on a short trail just outside. We enjoyed this quick stop quite a bit.
Desert View Watchtower
So, the Watch Tower and Desert View Point are quite possibly my new favorite spot at the Grand Canyon. Indeed, the stonework and Native America art are stunning. However, the best part is the view. Desert View Watchtower and Point lie just before the exit to the park. At this destination, it felt like I experienced the Grand Canyon for the first time all over again. One more time the Grand Canyon takes my breath away.
